As American Henrietta Lacks lay dying in a hospital bed in the 1950s, doctors randomly chose her and sliced off a piece of her tumor to experi- ment with, and it helped lead to the discovery of the polio vaccine, in vitro fertilization and gene mapping by discovering the immortal cell line known as HeLa. The scienti c ndings and the ethical issues surrounding it were explored in the 2010 novel The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, consid- ered by many to be the best book of the year. Oprah Winfrey stars in the TV movie based on the novel, playing Lacks’ daughter Deborah, and Rose Byrne plays the author of the novel, Rebecca Skloot.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 17 years since we were treated to
the idiosyncrasies of a murder investigation in the small town of Twin Peaks, and even harder to believe it’s been two years since word started to spread that creator David Lynch was making a follow-up to the series. Set 25 years after Laura Palmer’s murder, the Twin Peaks revival brings back several of the original series cast, including Kyle MacLachlan, Mädchen Amick, Ray Wise, Harry Goaz and Miguel Ferrer. David Lynch himself is directing all 18 episodes of the revival that is set to premiere on May 21st, but as of yet no word has leaked on what the series is about.

30 Rock was a huge hit for NBC, and a big part of that success was Emmy-winning producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock— who were with the series from the start—and Tracey Wig eld, who joined them near the end. The trio return to NBC for their latest series, about a Jersey mother and daughter’s strained relationship that becomes even more dif cult when the mother lands an internship at her daughter’s work. The series stars Briga Heelan, John Michael Higgins, Andrea Martin and Nicole Richie. With such an interesting mix of stars, Great News just might be the comedy hit of the mid-season.
