When Nelly Furtado rst
burst onto the scene in
2000 with her debut al-
bum Whoa, Nelly!, she
struck with a unique voice and fresh im-
age that drew attention and helped her earn
nominations for four Grammy awards, of
which she won one. In 2006, her third album
brought her back into the spotlight, with her
sound taking on a stronger dance, rap and hip
hop in uence. Furtado has released two more
albums since then, but none since 2012. The
Ride is set to be her sixth studio album, and
Furtado has said that it’s going to be similar in
tone to her debut album. She wrote the tracks
all over the world, from Chile to Kenya and
Nashville, and has said that there won’t be
any collaborations on it, with the album fo-
cusing on her own unique voice and lyrics
instead. The Ride will be released on March
31st. As it turns out, Furtado isn’t the only
2000s star making a comeback. Many of our favourite hitmakers from that era are returning to the scene with new releases, including Shania Twain, Michelle Branch and Take That.
It’s hard to believe it has been 15 years since Shania Twain released new music—2002’s Up! was her last album. Still, the 51-year-old art- ist hasn’t stopped working, doing a two-year residency in Las Vegas and touring the U.S. and Canada in 2015. The songs on her upcoming, and as yet to be titled, album include everything from ballads to upbeat tracks and girl power rock anthems. It’ll be interesting to see if the country superstar’s fth album comes out as strong as her previous efforts, considering it will be the rst album made without her former husband Robert “Mutt” Lange.

As a group, Take That has gone through a lot of changes since they rst formed in 1990, but one thing that hasn’t changed are the three core members: Gary Barlow, How- ard Donald and Mark Owen, who have been there since the start. The band might have broken up for nine years starting in the mid- ’90s, but after they got back together in 2005 it was like they’d never stopped making mu- sic together in the rst place. On March 17th they are releasing their eighth studio album, Wonderland, before launching their world tour. You can expect plenty of nostalgia on the album, with 2017 being the 25th anniver- sary of their rst album.
If you were listening to the radio in the early 2000s, you would certainly recognize Michelle Branch’s biggest hits, including “Are You Happy Now?”, “All You Wanted” and “The Game of Love”. From 2000 to 2004, Branch was one of the hottest young
talents out there. Then after releasing her third album as a solo artist in 2003, she disappeared from the spotlight. All of that changes on April 7, when the now 33-year-old returns with Hopeless Romantic, her fourth album. A lot has changed in her professional and personal life since we last heard from her, after all she now has a new record label behind her and a new romance with The Black Keys’ Patrick Car- ney. By the sounds of things, though, her music seems to be going back to her rock roots. The lyrics bring back the raw emotions of Branch’s original sound, and are inspired by her 2015 divorce from her former husband, bass player Teddy Landau, and her romance with Carney.
From Nelly Furtado to Michelle Branch, there’s no shortage of new music to relive the early 2000s through. Let the nostalgia begin.
