 apartment I decided to paint an accent wall this gorgeous deep mahogany colour (which was amazing!), however it casted shadows on the rest of the walls during the day and ultimately made my entire space look purple. Yikes!
the reno, whether it’s flooring, tile or fabrics. I like to have samples of all of the major pieces and look at everything in different types of light in the space that it’s going in. If the paint colour looks fabulous at all times of the day, then it’s a winner! Never choose a paint colour at the store.
2) Buying accessories first. I know it’s hard to avoid buying all the little cute things you see at HomeSense and of course there’s the feeling of FOMO
(fear of missing out) if you don’t buy something when you see it. Accumulating too many small pieces ultimately creates clutter. Instead, I look for large to medium pieces first and place them strategically where they become the hero items in a room. Once they have a home, then I look at where I need to fill in the gaps, when I have have a rough idea of the scale and quantity that I need to finish off a look. My only weakness is accent pillows. You can never have enough!
Now that I’ve got a lot of years under my belt, I try to avoid the following:
1) Choosing a colour and painting the room first. It’s important to know all of the other finishes that are going into
