Real Style: What is the best way to transition and update a skincare routine for spring?
Dr. Jessica Weiser: When transitioning from winter skin products to a spring or summer routine, it is important to account for environmental changes such as increased humidity, increased outdoor time, and risk of seasonal allergies. While it is still important to keep skin hydrated in warmer weather, often it is possible to stop using thick, rich creams and instead use lighter-weight hydrating
RS: What are the most common spring skincare mistakes?
JW: Spring skin care often lacks necessary skin emolliation. It is important to thoroughly rinse
skin after exposure to chlorine in the swimming pool or saltwater at the beach, to remove these irritants from the skin surface. Also, it is necessary to continue to apply moisturizer to the face and body immediately after showering to ensure proper hydration and to maintain an intact skin barrier.
Sun protection is underutilized during the warm months. Many people feel that sun protection should be reserved for pool and beach exclusively. In this case, many people do not apply SPF on

a daily basis or reapply adequately to prevent accumulating UV damage.
Due to increased humidity and an increased propensity for sweating as temperatures rise, the pores are more prone to congestion and associated acne blemishes. Routine skin cleansing and makeup removal nightly before bedtime is another important skin care step. Additionally, gentle exfoliation twice a week to encourage skin surface turnover and decrease clogging can be helpful in preventing acne.
Antiperspirant is actually more effective when applied at night to clean skin. During the day, sweat production increases and antiperspirants do not work as ef ciently to diminish or stop sweat production.
