To reduce the risk of frying your mane, Duplantis stresses the importance of a heat protect- ant product. She recommends Redken Pillow Proof, which she says moisturizes dry hair and also offers heat protection up to
450 degrees Fahrenheit. How- ever, Duplantis is also adamant about avoiding very high tem- peratures while using your heat styling tools. She draws a com- parison between heat styling and cooking and baking temper- atures, to highlight the dangers of scorching your strands.
“if you think about it, wa- ter boils at 100; we have our flat irons up to 450. We bake a cake at 375. When you are getting up
over the 400s, you are literally cooking your hair. You need to turn it down,” she says.
However, it’s not just heat styling and dryness that can ruin your fresh spring colour. Gianpaolo Colombo, Sebastian professional artist and artistic director at Toronto’s Hairafter Salon, believes products that contain high amounts of alco- hol and parabens should always be avoided. As well, it is key to nourish your coloured hair with the right products, which can be done right at home.
“The best way to avoid brassy yellow hair is to wash your hair with a purple shampoo and con- ditioner. Leave it on for five minutes and rinse off. You can use purple shampoo every wash if necessary,” Colombo tells us.
Along with the purple sham- poo, Colombo recommends us- ing a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner with a low ph bal- ance, which will be far acidic and therefore cause less damage to the hair. if you colour your hair to hide greys, Colombo also has an expert secret for correct- ing your roots at home, in be- tween salon appointments. “if you’re stuck and can’t make it to a salon, there are colour sprays or mousses that will cover grey temporarily,” he says.
