Tomorrow is not only just a new day, and a new year, but a new decade as well. 2020 has been talked about for a long time now, with dreams of flying cars and space trips, and while many of those things won’t be happening in the New Year, there are still plenty of cool things to look forward to. Here are some of our favourites.

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo: You have to admit, every time the Olympics come around it’s kind of a big deal. Last time Canada made a huge splash in swimming, and it’s a trend that is expected to continue with Penny Oleksiak once again leading the way. There are also some new sports making their first appearance, and old sports making a return to competition. This year you can watch karate, baseball/softball, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing, as well as some new events in some of the other categories. And of course who doesn’t keep an eye on the opening and closing ceremonies? We’re expecting some big things from such a technologically sound country as Japan. 

A Return of The Hunger Games: Of all the new books set to arrive next year, it’s Suzanne Collins return to the Hunger Games that is perhaps the most buzzed about. “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is set to be released on May 19th, and it takes place 64 years before the original trilogy. Unfortunately that means you won’t be seeing any sign of Katniss or her allies, but it’s sure to be a good read. And after waiting 10 years for a new novel, fans will sure eat it up.

A New Mars Mission: While taking a vacation to Mars may not yet be possible, a new mission is being launched to the Red Planet next summer. The Mars 2020 rover is set to launch, and you have to know it’s fully loaded with the latest technology to discover whatever is to be found. It’s definitely an interesting time to be a scientist.

The Presidential Race: Even if you aren’t from the United States, you more than likely already know there is an election next year. Of course before that happens there will an impeachment trial. No matter what the outcome is on both fronts, they are sure to be interesting. 

More Streaming Options: TV continues to change and evolve, and next year will be no different. Traditional television is slowly dying, and with the launch of HBO Max and Peacock in the new year it’s death will certainly speed up. Disney+ jumped the gun just over a month ago, and the new shows they have scheduled for next year will certainly garner a lot of attention as well. It’s going to be difficult choosing which streaming services you subscribe to, but with all the new shows debuting on the channels it will all boil down to what your particular interests are. 

The Yahoo Time Capsule Opens: 14 years ago Yahoo invited people to upload items into their virtual time capsule. Tens of thousands of videos, pictures, poems, works of art and more were submitted, and then handed over to the Smithsonian. The plan at the time was to open it on Yahoo’s 25th birthday, which is, you guessed it, in 2020. While 14 years may not sound like a long time, the contents of the Time Capsule will certainly bring back a lot of memories. 

A Field of Dreams: On August 13th, the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox will prove that life really does imitate art when the two teams meet in a corn field in Dyersville Iowa to play a baseball game. The 1989 movie Field of Dreams said that if you build it, they will come, and for 8000 fans, they will get to watch the game inspired by the movie in person. And the best thing? The game will be played near to where the movie was actually made.
