Since 1922, the beginning of November has marked the beginning of a beloved Toronto tradition known as The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The fair was founded as a means to set national standards for the judging of domestic animals. Since its invention, the Royal has provided farmers the opportunity to discuss and display new trends in agriculture. This year, over 300,000 visitors and 6,000 animals will flock to Exhibition Place to take in the world’s largest agricultural and international equestrian competition. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair allows Torontonians to escape the city for a little bit of country living, if only for a day. Once again, the winter fair returns to Toronto’s Exhibition Place this year until November 13, and is set to offer everything from critters to craft beer. 

No trip to the Royal Winter Fair would be complete without a viewing of one of their classic equestrian shows. From jumping championships to Royal Polo matches, the fair offers the opportunity to admire some of the world’s top riders and cheer on amateur equestrians. The Animal Theatre events offer visitors the chance to take in uncommon competitive sports such as sheep herding, rabbit jumping, and scent detection. A long time favourite of the fair is SuperDogs, where you can watch the furry creatures perform exciting tricks and stunts. The agricultural events are equally unique, including activities such as the Breeding Sheep Show and a butter sculpture competition.

If animal-related activities aren’t your thing, you’ll likely enjoy the Craft Beer Awards, which allows visitors to sample some of the best brews this country has to offer. Other gastronomical treats include apple pie baking demonstrations and a maple syrup judging, as well as a huge variety of artisanal foods displayed by fair’s 350 exhibitors.
