With 2016 coming to a grand close, it’s time to officially reflect on the leading fashion trends of the year. The past year has certainly showcased a number of key runway looks, which ranged from mesh accents and over-the-top florals to the now ubiquitous midi dress. However, a few trends truly stole the spotlight and caused a sensation, inspiring an entire year of street style and Instagram fashion. As we look back on the year in review, take a look at these popular trends from the international catwalks.

The Renaissance Look- Fall 2016 (as seen at Gucci, Chanel and Lanvin)

This year, Renaissance dressing was no longer relegated to period dramas and costume parties. In fact, the Renaissance era played a major role on the Fall 2016 runways, with luxurious velvets and puffed sleeves setting the stage. At Gucci, the trend surfaced in the form of a floor-length gown with long pink sleeves, a contrasting black bodice and a flowing printed skirt. Meanwhile, Chanel’s version featured dainty beadwork, airy sheer sleeves and a long, loose hem. At Lanvin, burgundy and navy blue velvet reigned supreme.

While not every fashionista can afford to jet off to Barcelona, Spanish flair could certainly be found on city sidewalks in just about every fashion capital this year. From vivid scarlet tones to florals, it wasn’t difficult to channel your inner Spanish señorita in 2016. At Michael Kors, playful flounces, bright red frocks and girlish floral appliqués all made a starring appearance. Meanwhile, darker reds, rich brocade fabrics and ruffles ruled at Oscar de la Renta. Diane von Furstenberg also embraced the trend, with sweet floral hair accessories and flirty, bold pink frocks.

Lingerie Style Slip Dresses- Spring 2016 (as seen at Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang and Givenchy)

This spring, we all abandoned thicker fabrics and took our sartorial cues from the 1990s, with baby doll slip dresses stealing the catwalks. Calvin Klein showcased this aesthetic with creamy and silvery hues, silky fabrics and tie straps. At Alexander Wang, pale maxi frocks were adorned with lace and sultry cut-outs, while Givenchy stuck to filmy, see-through black lace dresses.
