Sharon Graubard of MintModa Trend Forecasting On Fall 2016’s Key Fashion Looks
As the founder and creative director of New York City-based trend forecasting company MintModa, Sharon Graubard is always one step ahead of the currently reigning trends. Graubard, who has worked in the fashion industry for 20 years, recently made a stop in Toronto at a Fashion Group International Trend Forecasting event.
Real Style chatted with the seasoned trendsetter and fashion maven about her favourite runway trends for Fall 2016, which include a borrowed from the boys aesthetic. Graubard also spoke to us about why the groovy Seventies continue to have a sartorial influence, and spilled on her favourite wardrobe staples for autumn. Here’s what she had to say about embracing the season’s top statement looks, selecting the perfect outerwear for the changing weather and more.
Real Style: What are your favourite trends for Fall 2016?
Sharon: There’s a big movement toward slouchy menswear, which I love. I think the big pants are going to impact this fall, because women don’t have them. Everybody has been wearing the skinnies. So, wonderful menswear tailored pants with the slouchy advantage of putting your hands in your pockets. I think it was influenced by Phoebe Philo’s Céline collection with the big plaids.
Another thing that I think is happening is luxurious minimalism. Simple shapes, sweater dressing, almost a blurring between loungewear and everyday wear. The knit dress is definitely a key- knit dressing head to toe, slouchy tunics, long cardigans and kind of dusty colours. Along with that is silk too, kind of a Halston ‘70s feeling. The 1970s are still being mimed, but in all different ways.
Real Style: What is it about 1970s inspired fashion in particular which you like?
Sharon: I call it the liberated ‘70s, because it was the moment when women were really expressing their sexuality. You had a lot of beautiful jerseys that skimmed the body, very sensual and very much about the body and movement. The other part of the ‘70s was kind of the aftermath of hippies. There was paisley, fur, vintage dresses and the whole London boutique revolution.
Real Style: Who are some of your favourite designers?
Sharon: Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, Marni and Yohji Yamamoto. Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, I always say “all roads lead to Rei.” For the new people coming up, Vetements is so interesting. I love Christopher Kane and Delpozo, which is kind of a fantasy way of looking at fashion.
Real Style: In your opinion, what are some style essentials that all women should have for Fall 2016?
Sharon: I’m going to say the slouchy pants, a midi skirt, wide leg jeans and a soft print blouse with ruffles that is ‘70s influenced. Also, a fabulous shearling coat, fun fur or another great outerwear piece like a parka. An army parka is still an essential item, or an oversized puffer.
