Spring 2018’s Wildest Runway Trend Is Retro Art Prints

With art exhibits everywhere welcoming new retrospectives in the spring, it’s safe to say that the months between March and June are full of creativity. However, the art gallery and the runway collided this season, with painterly, retro patterns lighting up the catwalks. Inspired by legendary late artists such as Picasso and Andy Warhol, abstract prints and pop art were featured in designer collections. Take a closer look at this trend right now, and turn to the likes of Calvin Klein, Versace and Prada for your sartorial inspiration.

Calvin Klein

Ladylike patterns were key at Calvin Klein, where a toned-down take on the trend made a special appearance. We are liking this knee-length white lace frock, which is adorned with a vintage style black and white portrait motif. With a mix of femininity and simplicity, this design proves that wearable art is entirely a possibility.

Versace

The party was in full swing on the Versace catwalk, as designer Donatella Versace turned to vibrant shades for her approach to artsy prints. Models sported skintight jumpsuits and long strappy gowns which were decorated with embellishment and a pop art-esque vibe. From the punchy rainbow tones to the Vogue magazine design on the dresses, Versace made it somewhat edgy and rebellious to wear artistic prints.

Prada

At Prada, a comic book theme dominated the runway, and brightened this knee-length grey coat. With a dark, broody aesthetic, an otherwise timeless jacket was transformed from a traditional topper to a work of art in itself. For the non-conformist who shies away from brighter shades and crazy sparkle, this was a reasonable way to rock the trend of artsy dressing.
