How To Prepare Your Skin For Cooler Weather

As we prepare for the cooler, fall weather, we tend to unpack our sweaters and jackets, but forget to change up our skincare routine.  It’s important to remember it though, after all our skin reacts to the new temperature as well. After all the summer weather generally sees more humidity, which helps our skin stay moisturized. When that moisture barrier disappears however, our skin gets more sensitive, dry and irritated. Thankfully there are some things we can do for that.

Hydrate with Elastin, Collagen or Aloe

Keeping your skin hydrated is extremely important for all of us, but if your skin is extremely sensitive or your suffer with conditions like eczema, it’s even more important. Hydrating your skin with essential oils or creams with elastin, collagen or aloe can help. They can nourish your skin, and help it handle the cooler temperatures.

Use A Thicker Moisturizer

Thicker moisturizers helps you add more moisture to your skin, and helps it retain it. You don’t need to apply it in the morning either. Just before bed will be more than enough. You don’t need to worry about it clogging your pores either, as there are options out there that will help you avoid that.

Add Eye Creams and Lip Moisturizers To Your Routine

Some people swear by using eye creams and lip moisturizers all year long, but it’s not always necessary. In the cooler months however, everyone should be using them to moisturize their lips and skin around their eyes.

Use Exfoliants and Retinoids Less Often

Topical retinoids and exfoliants can irritate your skin, and when the weather is cooler, it’s even more possible. Be careful using them during the fall however, as you may see more breakouts than you want to.

Sunscreen Is Still Important To Use

Even though the sun isn’t out as often, and the weather is cooler, UV radiation is still present. It’s especially important to use it during your morning commute if you are driving in the morning sun, or if you are going for a nice fall walk to enjoy the colours. Like in the summer, using sunscreen you will decrease the risk of skin cancer.

Add Vitamin C

Vitamin C can help even skin pigmentations, boost collagen production, and block SPF rays that you sunscreen misses.

Use A Humidifier

Most people don’t realize how dry heating makes our skin. It makes our skin crack and our noses bleed because it removes moisture from the air. By running a humidifier at night you can add that moisture back. You skin will thank you. Make sure to change the filter often however, and fill up the water reservoir nightly.
