Although hair crimping may have ruled as a key hairstyle trend of the 1980s, this retro coiffure is back in style for the season ahead. Crimped locks, which were once known for their frizzy texture and kitschy reputation, have been elevated to voluminous new lengths this season.

Pint-sized powerhouse Ariana Grande showcased crimped locks at the MTV Music Video Awards in August, which led to a resurgence of crinkled strands. The 23-year-old songstress brought a textured twist to her signature high ponytail, with slightly crimped pieces.

The trend of crimping can also be spotted on Instagram, where hair chameleons are trading their pin-straight tresses for subtle texture. From crimped sections of hair which are being used to accessorize side plaits to all-over styled locks, this ‘80s fad is back in full force.

While we wouldn’t recommend stepping out with a full head of tightly crimped locks, a few styled segments can certainly bring your straight tresses to life. If you’re looking for an alternative to summer’s beachy waves, hair crimping may be your solution.

Keep the look playful and modern during the day, with a fresh-faced visage, minimal eye makeup and pale pink lips. If you’re ready to experiment with bold beauty for a night, crimped waves paired with red lipstick can also help you channel your inner siren. Either way, texture is officially en vogue, and it seems that crimped strands are quickly becoming a rising hair trend.
