You may adore smoked salmon, but it looks like this Omega 3-enriched fish is now making the swim from the dinner table to the beauty counter. The latest buzz skincare ingredient is salmon egg enzyme, which is said to promote clear skin and a brightened complexion.

In a study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, a group of women between the ages of 31-70 used a cream which was made with salmon eggs (also known as roe). The roe was used to treat photodamaged skin, and was said to encourage clarity as a result.

The study revealed that the use of topical hydrolyzed roe protein could contribute to a refreshed complexion, with few cases of stinging or burning sensations. The salmon egg was compared to glycolic acid, which was used as a skincare treatment on another group of study participants.

In fact, salmon egg is finding its way into a variety of skincare products, such as day creams, facial cleansers and skin serums. The enzyme found in roe is being praised for its anti-aging benefits, which are said to result in softened skin.

According to Perricone MD, this enzyme tackles dead skin cells, helps to reduce the effects of irritated or peeling skin and can contribute to a radiant effect. For anyone looking for refreshed and rejuvenated skin this season, salmon egg enzyme may be a new beauty solution.
