It’s a well-known fact that onion juice is a staple in the kitchen, but evidently, beauty lovers are also incorporating this grocery store mainstay into their daily brow regimen.
Toronto-based beauty blogger Farah Dhukai recently shared a short Instagram video, which claims that the sulphur content in onion juice can help to encourage hair growth. In the clip, Dhukai can be seen massaging the juice on her eyebrows. She claims that leaving the onion juice on your arches for five minutes and allowing it to dry to promote thicker, defined brows over time. Dhukai also claims that the juice must be used on a daily basis, in order to achieve results.

While most beauty mavens with sparse or thin eyebrows may dream of arches which would make Cara Delevingne jealous, one has to question the effectiveness of this new technique. After all, there’s no question that onion juice can irritate the eyes, cause inflammation and lead to problems for contact lens wearers. But can a daily dose of onion juice actually lead to enhanced and gorgeous brows?
In a statement to Allure magazine, West Islip, New York-based dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla claims that onion juice can help with hair growth on the scalp. However, there is no evidence that it can specifically target the eyebrows.
“Sulfur is important in hair; however, applying onion juice does not mean that the sulfur is incorporated into the hair strand. Rather, the sulfur acts as a natural anti-inflammatory,” said Mariwalla to Allure.
“Usually thinned brows are due to overplucking and waxing,” she also said. “I don’t want people to think that putting onion juice on every day is going to suddenly give them luscious, thick brows.”
If you’re looking to darken or thicken your eyebrows, it may be a safer and more effective move to use a brow pencil or powder for the desired results. After all, we all know that onion juice spilling into the eyes can lead to tears- not to mention irritated and stinging peepers!
