Is Starfish Extract An Unexpected New Skincare Ingredient?
Although the thought of a starfish may bring you back to your last beach vacation, starfish extract is a surprising new beauty ingredient. In fact, this extract is said to offer the skincare benefits of collagen, calcium and benefits.
While vegan or vegetarian beauty lovers may want to avoid incorporating starfish into their skincare regimen, this key ingredient just may provide a beauty boost. Derived from the star-shaped sea creature, starfish extract is said to be effective due to the marine animal’s ability to regenerate its own limbs.
According to FutureDerm, starfish skin is boosted with calcium, which functions as a defense mechanism against underwater predators. In terms of regenerating human skin, starfish extract may be able to rejuvenate the skin for a youthful, hydrated complexion.
In a study conducted by the International Journal of Molecular Medicine, the skincare effects of Asterina pectinifera extracts (or extracts from the blue bat star species of starfish) were tested. The study reported that the extract was used to treat skin pigmentation, and may be helpful as a potential treatment for hyperpigmentation.
While it may be too early to tell if starfish extract will have a huge impact on the world of skincare, it has already made its way into skin and eye creams. Even if you’re not ready to escape to the ocean, it may be worthwhile to include starfish as part of your beauty routine.
