As days get shorter and the temperature drops to sub-zero degrees, it’s no wonder many people suffer from winter blues especially after the fun festivities and holiday season are over. Although the murky skies and falling snow will make you want to curl up under your blanket, break out of your winter slump with these helpful tips that will sure bring you the extra energy boost you need to make your winter days brighter.
1) Fit in weekly workouts into your schedule: Although the dreary grey skies and freezing temperatures may deter you from hitting the gym, make time to exercise at least twice a week whether at the gym or at home. According to CTV News, exercise helps battle winter depression by regulating our moods and strengthening our immune system. It also improves our sleep to help us a get a goodnight’s rest. Incorporate some yoga routines into your weekly exercise or sway to the music in a Zumba class to help you release some tension and lift your spirits.
2) Eat lean proteins and fruit: It may be difficult to stick to a healthy diet especially after the holiday season but several studies show that snacking on sweets and other unhealthy carbs during winter leads to increased blood sugar levels which can cause fatigue and headaches from a sugar crash. Therefore, it’s best to stay away from sugar during the winter season and instead substitute them with healthy sweets, such as berries and bananas, to help you combat stress. Eating more lean proteins, such as salmon, and dairy, which are good sources of Vitamin D, can significantly improve your mood and help you beat fatigue.
3) Enjoy a cold shower: Although a cold shower doesn’t sound too relaxing during the winter season, according to Medical Daily, taking cold showers can help to ease stress and depression. In fact, showering in ice cold water is said to increase your tolerance to stress. This acts as an anti-depressant, by sending electrical impulses from your nerves to the brain. It also stimulates blood circulation which improves our overall heart health. So if you’re in need of a quick pick-me-up on those early mornings, soak yourself in ice cold water to boost your alertness and mood.
4) Take up a winter hobby: Embrace the cold outdoors and soak up some sun to keep your body active. Although sun exposure is rare in the winter time, direct sun exposure increases serotonin levels to keep you more alert and active. However even without the sun, you can still indulge in some fun winter activities, whether you’re skating with friends or are gliding down the hills on skis.
