only 10 minutes away from high-end shop- ping. Remarkable.
RS: What originally inspired you to be- come an actor?
WC: I can only describe my inspiration as an epiphany. And maybe the only one I’ve ever had. I was about four, standing on an empty stage in a church basement, as my mother delivered something for a potluck. I remember so clearly thinking, I will be an actor! Where the heck that idea came from baf es me to this day because we were the least theatrical family you’d ever met.
RS: Describe your dream role, if you had to choose just one.
WC: Gosh, one dream role is really hard because you always fall in love with something about any character you play. I would have to choose a character that could have vast experiences. The matriarch of an enormous and powerful family, with genera- tions of complexities, fortunes gained and lost, deep passions, euphoric victories and devastating disappointments. Just like life, but more.
RS: Who are your biggest idols in Holly- wood, as far as actors and directors go?
WC: The one and only Meryl Streep.
RS: How do you psych yourself up for a
new role and get into character?
WC: A new role is like opening a gift. A chance to nd your way into someone else’s life. You look for ways you are the same and slip in through those similarities, like secret passages. Endlessly fascinating.
RS: What upcoming projects can audi- ences expect to see you in?
WC: The Son, an AMC series starring Pierce Brosnan. It’s a period piece, set in Texas at the turn of the century. I’m his lover. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.
The new Bruce Willis movie, Death Wish. I’m his shrink, and having done a lot
of therapy myself I felt very quali ed. Workin’ Moms, on CBC, starring the very
talented Catherine Reitman.
“A NEW ROLE IS LIKE OPENING A GIFT. A CHANCE TO FIND YOUR WAY INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE. YOU LOOK FOR WAYS YOU ARE THE SAME AND SLIP IN THROUGH THOSE SIMILARITIES, LIKE SECRET PASSAGES.”
RS: How would you describe your style when you’re away from the screen?
WC: Off camera, I have a uniform. Jeans, boots, tees and a leather jacket. When you get dressed up for a living, spending a lot of time thinking about what you’re going to wear can feel like work. And of course at home I’m only ever in cozy sweats!
