December 7th, NBC
After the success of Grease Live last year, TV studios have been hurrying to release their own live musicals. NBC is the next
to jump on the bandwagon, airing Hairspray Live on December 7. The show
is set to be lmed on the Universal Studios back lot, which means a fair bit of
it will take place outdoors. The timing couldn’t be
more critical as well, as
the performance of “Good Morning Baltimore” is timed to be performed just as the sun is setting, which should make for a very beautiful sequence. The audience in attendance also gets a chance to play a role as well, both
as people from Baltimore and as part of The Corny Collins Show. And if that’s not enough to get you to tune in, the all-star cast includes Ariana Grande, Martin Short, Jennifer Hudson,
HairSpray live
Kristin Chenoweth, Derek Hough, Andrea Martin and Sean Hayes.
EmERALD CiTy
January 6th, NBC
It’s taken almost three years for this series based on the Land of Oz books by L. Frank Baum to get made. Originally given
the green light way back in 2014, Emerald City
is described as an edgier, darker version of The Wizard of Oz brought into modern times. Relative newcomer Adria Arjona stars as Dorothy Gale, with veteran actors Vincent D’Onofrio and Joely Richardson co- starring as The Wizard and Glinda respectively. The series took so long to come to the small screen due to creative differences between NBC and the original writer/ showrunner Josh Friedman, but since his replacement, the series has moved forward at full steam.
ONE DAy AT A TimE
January 6th, Net ix
One thing you don’t see a lot of are updates of sitcoms, because most of the time they don’t work very well. Net ix is hoping their streak of popular programming changes that as they look
to redo the 1975 series One
Day at a Time. To avoid comparisons, the new series won’t share a lot with
the original, except for a character named Dwayne Schneider. This time around it follows three generations of the same Cuban-American family living in the same house. With shows like Modern Family and Fresh Off the Boat being such big hits, Net ix is hoping to catch on to the genre with their own series surrounding an immigrant family.
24: LEGACy
February 5th, Fox
It’s hard to say how a spin- off of the popular FOX TV show 24 will do, considering the most popular character, Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer, won’t be in it. This series follows the story of war hero Eric Carter (played by Corey Hawkins), as he returns to the United States and is faced with stopping the largest terrorist attacks on American soil. The series will follow the format of the original, with each episode playing out over a “real- time” hour, and some of the characters from the original series may drop in to make
a cameo, but otherwise this should be considered its own, independent series. Miranda Otto and Jimmy Smits co-star in this action- drama that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Lorde’s 2013 debut album Pure Heroine put the New Zealand singer-songwriter on the map, and this past summer the 19-year-old started teasing the arrival of a new album that could very well let the world know that she’s not a one hit wonder. In July she tweeted “Took a helicopter out into the wilderness, spent three days alone writing and made some exciting breakthroughs.” She followed up with an Instagram message a month later that stated “I’ve worked like a dog for a year making this thing great for you guys. The record is writ- ten—we’re in the production stage now.” All things are pointing toward an early 2017 re- lease of a new album.
Montreal-based rockers Arcade Fire are expected to release a new album and go on tour in 2017. The band has been recording the al- bum in Montreal and Paris between summer festival gigs, which included a stop at the Way- Home festival outside Toronto. Guitarist Tim Kingsbury told the CBC the festivals were booked to “put a little burst of energy back into the process.” The album will be the band’s fth release, and the rst since the 2013 award- winning release Re ektor.
One of the biggest tours of 2017 will be Katy Perry’s. While her Summer Olympics anthem Rise didn’t do as well as expected, the pop star has a new album on the way, and has already announced that she’s going to be busy touring throughout 2017. It’s about time too, consider- ing Prism was released in October 2013. Perry has taken a bit of time for herself lately, stating it would be good for her music too, since she didn’t want to “jump on any trends” and that she needed to “evolve.” We’re curious to see if this means she’s going to reinvent herself with a new sound for the album, or if her sound is just going to get stronger.
