While most people won’t
get the chance to see la la land until its wide release on December 16th, it may
be the lm to beat at this year’s award ceremonies. Not only did it take home
the coveted People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival,
but it’s been getting some of the top critic reviews of the year as well. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone simply
wow as a jazz pianist and the aspiring actress he falls for, and because of that they could both potentially take home the top acting awards. Damien Chazelle is a relative newcomer when it comes
to directing lms, but his successful 2014 hit Whiplash gave him the freedom to create this musical love story set in Los Angeles, and it could be award-winning for him as well. Still, taking home the top Oscars won’t be easy to do, considering some of the competition.

acting Oscar for his role
in the 2008 Brad Pitt lm
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He might be the rst in the family to take home an acting Oscar too, because manchester By the
sea is that good. Af eck
has always been excellent at playing the lonely outcast, but he takes it up a few notches for this one. In the lm, he plays a man forced to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies—a role he’s not prepared for. Af eck shows his character’s pain from start to nish,
while adding an unexpected comedic touch to help lighten the overall dark tone of the lm. If Af eck is going to win
though, he’s going to have to get past Denzel Washington.
For the last couple of years there has been a lot of talk of the lack of diversity in the Oscars when it comes to both nominations and wins, but one actor who hasn’t
had a problem with either
is Denzel Washington. The soon-to-be 63-year-old actor should receive his seventh acting nomination (two of which he’s won) for fences, a movie about an African American father struggling
to raise his family in the 1950s. Viola Davis, who won an Emmy Award last year for her role on the CBS TV series How To Get Away With Murder, co-stars in the racially charged lm. Davis herself is no stranger to Oscar nominations with two, and could very well walk away with her rst statue.
oddly no stranger to making lms. He directed the critically acclaimed lm A Single
Man in 2009, and this time around he could very well take home a boatload of awards. Amy Adams should at the very least get a sixth Oscar nomination for her role as an art gallery owner who believes her ex-husband’s revenge tale novel is a veiled threat against her. Jake Gyllenhaal could very well get a nomination as well for playing Adams’ ex-husband, as could co-star Michael Shannon, who plays a police of cer investigating a murder.
From blockbusters to small independent lms, 2016 has been a terri c year for fans of the art, and these lms and performances will certainly make this awards season one to watch.
