W Sander Lak of Sies Marjan
ith his rising New York City-based label Sies Marjan getting
rave reviews, Dutch designer Sander Lak may be fashion’s newest It-boy. The 33-year-old talent studied at Central Saint Martins in London, and was formerly the head of design at Dries Van Noten for ve years. Before joining the Belgian fashion house, Lak also worked for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim.
Lak launched Sies Marjan in February 2016, naming his label after his late father, Sies, and his mother, Marjan. Sies Marjan quickly gained a reputation for its colourful designs, which display a feminine yet quirky charm. With vague in uences from his Dries Van Noten days, Lak’s crea- tions for Spring 2017 involved plenty of rosy pinks and splashy oral prints. From asymmetrical skirts and silky trousers to pleated culottes and crepey pastel blouses, the Spring 2017 runway at Sies Marjan revealed an explosion of texture and colour.
It’s an approach that is quickly earning him some major industry at- tention, with the likes of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour attending his shows. Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell have also been spotted wearing his designs.
Lak is recognized for his famously down-to-earth attitude and inclu- siveness. In a 2016 interview with Vogue, the rising designer described his creative journey: “It’s a very collaborative process, and I’ve made sure I have people around me who I like and trust. So it’s work, but it’s fun,” he said.
With an A-list fan base and enticing Spring 2017 collection, Lak just might be on his way to becoming a household name. He’s certainly al- ready a favourite on, and off, the catwalk.
