With television series such as Hap and Leonard and M.I. High
already under her belt, Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh hit a much wider audience last year when she debuted a brand new character in the hit AMC series The Walking Dead. She plays Jadis, the leader of the junkyard- living Scavengers, who betrays Rick and his group in the Season 7 nale. Real Style spoke to McIntosh about her role in the show.
real style: How have the fans reacted to Jadis? Particularly your
betrayal of Rick?
fans of the show. They are having fun with her, and they have been having fun [insulting] her, but they seem to separate me as a
person from her as a character. I see a couple of
negative comments, but you’ve got to ignore those, don’t you?
rs: How did you prepare for your role?
pm: I think the comedy answer would be that I got a really weird haircut. The true answer is that she spoke to me really easily. It is like she formed in my mind very early. Even on audition day, which is weird, because I did not have a lot of information on her. It’s just like with all my work, I really put myself in these situations quite personally and by the time we
are shooting, it is all really real to me. It’s a really weird job to do.
It really is. But the trouble with trying to explain your work too much is that it can sound terribly pretentious. And at the same time, there is a certain material magic
to it, which also makes you sound like a crazy hippie. It is a weird process to go through.
rs: What can we expect from Jadis next year?
pm: Well, I’m not allowed to
talk about anything that actually happens. But, I can talk about
the season in general. As an audience member, you can expect lots of action, lots of adrenaline, and lots of emotion, because
of course, you care about these people so much. Negan is as egotistical, and as assured of himself, as ever. And they’re really going into the war. For Jadis, it is going to be the case of whichever side is the winning side, is the one she’ll want to be on. That’s really her game plan. But of course, nothing is ever simple in this universe.
rs: What was it like working with Jeffrey Dean Morgan?
pm: Him, as an actor, I got to know from just seeing on set and saying hello. I’ve actually been watching the show for a while now, and I am quite terri ed
