 TIFF 2019
Year in and year out,
The Toronto International Film Festival is known
for showcasing some of the very best films of the year. Here are a few premiering during the 10- day event that could end up taking home some major awards during next year’s Oscars.
BEST PICTURE
Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel
The Goldfinch is one of TIFF’s most anticipated films. It tells the story of a young boy whose life is turned upside down after his mother is killed during a terrorist attack. From there his life spirals
out of control, leading him from grief and
guilt, to reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all he tries to determine if his life experiences were unavoidable due to fate or if they were caused by his character.
In recent years, the Academy has been making strides to improve their diversity, which includes taking a closer
look at films directed by women, something TIFF has in abundance in 2019. Harriet is one of them, and it tells the true story of American abolitionist Harriet Tubman. From her escape from slavery
to her transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes, Harriet tells the story of how
a black woman freed hundreds of slaves and changed the landscape of a country.
BEST ACTRESS
It’s been several years since Renée Zellweger received any sort of Oscar buzz, but the 2004 Best Supporting Actress winner is getting noticed for her role in the biographical film Judy. In it she plays Judy Garland during her 1968 series of sold-out concerts
in London. Zellweger does her own singing
for the film, and is even releasing her first ever solo album in conjunction with the film’s release.
While one actress may be making her return to the Oscars, another is there almost every year. Meryl Streep’s performance in The Laundromat is one
of the year’s best. In
the film Streep plays a widow who takes it upon herself to investigate
an insurance fraud and ends up uncovering a worldwide tax scheme.
BEST ACTOR
The Batman villain The Joker helped Heath Ledger win an Oscar, and he might just do
the same for Joaquin Phoenix. The gritty, standalone origin film The Joker redefines the character and is fully driven by Phoenix’s masterful acting. It’s these types of performances that really make the Academy stand up and take notice.
Of course, another role that usually gets a lot of attention is one based on a real-life person.
In A Beautiful Day in
the Neighborhood Tom Hanks takes on the role of Fred Rogers. The
film tells the story of his real-life friendship with journalist Tom Junod, and Hanks looks and sounds so much like the long- time children’s TV host that some people might have a hard time telling the difference between them.
